Staff responsible for transporting children with disabilities encounter complex challenges in providing transportation services for this population. Nationally, transporting children with disabilities has become increasingly demanding on school districts across our nation due to the increased severity of medical and emotional challenges required to be addressed. The number of children requiring specialized transportation services continues to increase, requiring trained staff with specialized knowledge. Both bus drivers and attendants require specific training and the ability to correctly operate specialized equipment and use assistive technology devices in accordance with the manufacturer’s written instructions. School districts, large and small, are required to demonstrate multifaceted skills to safely transport children with very specific and individual special needs.
The requirements and responsibilities to provide services for these children are both challenging and rewarding. Keeping up to date and informed about industry-recommended best practices is crucial for professional growth and for promoting safe transportation.
