Today marks the start of National School Bus Safety Week, an important annual initiative that occurs during the third full week of October. The week is aimed to raise awareness about the importance of school bus safety for local communities nationwide.

“This week allows all of us to be vigilant and proactive in our efforts to help our school communities understand school bus safety protocols, such as proper boarding and exiting procedures, understanding of the “danger zone”, and knowing the significance of the flashing lights and stop arms on buses. We believe that by equipping students, parents, and school personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone involved,” says Teena Mitchell, NAPT President.

NAPT CEO and Executive Director Molly McGee Hewitt echoed Mitchell's sentiments and further elaborated, “We are the National Association for Pupil Transportation, recognized as the foremost authority on student transportation; our goal is to serve our members, who proudly define our organization, at the highest level. Celebrating this week of awareness and action provides us with the opportunity to promote the yellow school bus by highlighting distinctive leadership practices and accomplishments in operations across the United States and Canada. We understand that one week is insufficient to fully convey the significance of school bus safety; therefore, we will dedicate ourselves to build upon what this week offers us.”

Throughout the week, NAPT will highlight the winners of the 2023-24 National School Bus Safety Poster Contest and formally introduce the 2024-25 National Poster Contest theme and updated guidelines. The annual contest is the focal point of National School Bus Safety Week; over the past year, students from 20 states created and submitted artwork to the national competition, illustrating the theme of Driving Safely Into the Future.

Furthermore, industry contributions will be showcased through sharing stories, facts, and recognizing the dedicated individuals who strive to support our students and staff.
