Professional Development Series (PDS) Program
Overview
In 1999, a workgroup representing the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT), National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS), and the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transportation Safety Institute was established to determine what training was needed for pupil transportation personnel nationwide.
The workgroup first reviewed the duties for school transportation personnel, and then developed a list of potential courses. The outcome was an education-based program that can prepare individuals for their daily tasks through education and professional development.
Courses that will enhance the skills of pupil transportation professionals have been developed in each of the following areas: Orientation, Communications, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Physical Resource Management, Operations/Systems Management, Leadership and Special Education.
The courses will be taken through classroom instruction or as part of a workshop presented at a national, regional or state school transportation conference. Course instructors will follow a syllabus of instruction that is NAPT-approved.
